The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents about the potential fire hazards associated with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries as Fire Prevention Week approaches.
Fire Prevention Week will be observed October 4 through October 10 with this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in cell phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters. State fire officials warn that damaged batteries or improper charging can cause batteries to overheat, catch fire or explode.
Residents are encouraged to use the charger that came with a device or one approved by its manufacturer and to charge devices on hard, flat surfaces rather than beds, couches or underneath pillows.
Officials say people should stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, begins swelling or smoking, or develops an unusual odor. Devices should also be unplugged when fully charged.
Larger battery-powered equipment, including e-bikes, scooters and power tools, should be charged outside and away from exits when possible because their larger batteries can produce rapidly growing fires if they fail.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is also reminding Tennesseans that working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan are important because residents may have as little as two minutes to escape after a smoke alarm sounds.
