The City of St. Joseph is asking water customers to voluntarily reduce unnecessary water use as hot, dry weather and drought conditions continue.
According to the city’s Utilities and Public Works Department, extreme heat and limited rainfall have increased demand on the water system. The conservation measures are voluntary at this time and are intended to reduce strain on the system and help maintain adequate supplies for essential needs.
Customers are being asked to limit lawn and landscape watering and, when watering is necessary, do so during the early morning or evening. Residents are also encouraged to avoid unnecessary washing of vehicles and outdoor surfaces, postpone filling or topping off swimming pools, check outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks and reduce other non-essential water use.
City officials said taking voluntary conservation measures now could help reduce the possibility of more restrictive measures becoming necessary later.
The city will continue monitoring conditions.
