Giles County Cooling Shelters Available During Extreme Heat

The Giles County Office of Emergency Management is making temporary cooling shelters available as needed with extreme heat expected over the next several days.
The shelters are being opened in cooperation with the county’s severe weather shelter partners and are intended to provide temporary relief from the heat rather than long-term accommodations.
Anyone needing a cooling shelter should call the Giles County E-911 Center at 931-363-0911 and request contact from the Giles County Office of Emergency Management.
OEM staff will determine the closest available shelter and arrange for a volunteer to meet the individual at the location.
Officials ask residents to be patient because the office has a limited number of paid staff and relies heavily on volunteers to provide the service.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, remain in air conditioning when possible and check frequently on elderly residents and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
Officials are also reminding residents to protect pets by providing fresh water and shade or air conditioning, limiting their time outdoors and never leaving them inside a parked vehicle.
