According to media reports, the Lauderdale County Commission is scheduled to vote Monday on a proposal that would double the county’s annual contribution to Florence-Lauderdale Animal Services.
Under the proposed resolution, county funding for the animal shelter would increase from $250,000 to $500,000 for the upcoming fiscal year.
The City of Florence currently spends more than $1.5 million annually on animal services and has pushed for Lauderdale County to contribute a larger share of the cost.
Florence-Lauderdale Animal Services took in more than 5,300 animals last year, with shelter officials citing animal care as a major financial expense.
Shelter Director Cheryl Jones said additional funding could help address a backlog of animals awaiting spay and neuter procedures and provide more flexibility for shelter operations.
The Lauderdale County Commission is expected to consider the proposed funding increase during its regular meeting Monday.
