According to media reports, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a Columbia man hospitalized Saturday morning.
Columbia Police responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. to a home in the 300 block of Skyview Drive following a report of a man firing rounds outside into the ground.
Police say 48-year-old Matthew Kirk fired multiple rounds at responding officers, and one officer returned fire.
Kirk then reportedly went back inside the residence.
SWAT officers and crisis negotiators responded and established contact with Kirk by phone.
During negotiations, officers learned Kirk had suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the exchange of gunfire.
An emergency entry team entered the residence because of the potential for life-threatening injuries and took Kirk into custody without further incident.
Kirk was treated at the scene before being airlifted by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for surgery.
No Columbia Police officers were injured.
The officer who fired at Kirk was placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with standard procedure.
Columbia Police Chief Jeremy Haywood contacted District Attorney Brent Cooper and requested that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
