The Lauderdale County, Alabama, Sheriff’s Department is reminding residents that a new state law takes effect October 1 regarding how dogs may be tethered or confined outdoors. The law requires that, instead of being chained, dogs must be confined using a tether and trolley system, and sets standards that must be followed. It also dictates that dogs must be provided shelter that is large enough for the dog to stand in, has a solid floor and a large enough opening to accommodate the dog, is sturdy with proper ventilation, that it is free of waste, debris and standing water, and that dogs have access to shelter at all times.
