Sen. Joey Hensley Reflects on History and Meaning of Labor Day

State Sen. Joey Hensley is reflecting on the history and significance of Labor Day, which will be observed on Monday, September 7.
Hensley noted that Labor Day celebrations in the United States date back to the 1880s, with early observances featuring parades, picnics and other activities honoring American workers. The holiday was officially recognized nationally by an Act of Congress in 1894.
The early Labor Day movement also drew attention to issues facing workers during the Industrial Revolution, including long working hours, unsafe conditions and child labor. Those concerns eventually contributed to reforms aimed at improving conditions for American workers.
Hensley said the holiday has evolved into a time for families to enjoy recreation and rest while continuing to recognize the contributions workers make to their communities and the nation’s economy.
Hensley encouraged Tennesseans to have a happy and safe Labor Day holiday.
