Maury County Fire Department Details Water Supply Operation During Fatal I-65 Crash

The Maury County Fire Department has released additional details about its response to Tuesday’s fatal multi-vehicle crash and fire on Interstate 65 near mile marker 50.

The department responded on mutual aid to the Spring Hill Fire Department after three tractor-trailers caught fire. Five Maury County tankers were initially sent to the scene to provide water, while command staff coordinated resources with Spring Hill’s incident commander.

Because of the amount of fire, burning cargo and Tuesday’s heat, firefighters transitioned to a ladder pipe operation. Two additional Maury County engines responded to Kedron Road, where crews dropped a supply line from the bridge to the interstate and connected the operation to a hydrant. Approximately 1,800 feet of hose was deployed.

Maury County Fire Department reports approximately 50,000 gallons of water were flowed from Truck 21, while another 15,000 gallons were delivered through a tanker shuttle to supply Spring Hill Fire Department engines.

One person died in the crash. Multiple agencies assisted with the response, including the Maury County Sheriff’s Department, Spring Hill Police Department, Maury County 911 and Maury County Office of Emergency Management.

Lawrence County Fire & Rescue provided standby coverage for the southern portion of Maury County while Maury County units were committed to the I-65 incident.
