Mount Pleasant Police Warn Residents About Common Phone Scams

The Mount Pleasant Police Department is encouraging residents, particularly senior citizens, to be aware of common phone scams and the tactics scammers use to obtain personal or financial information.

Police encourage residents to independently verify the identity of anyone who calls requesting personal information and never provide information such as a home address, date of birth, full name, banking or credit card information, Social Security number, or mother’s maiden name over the phone.

Other recommendations include registering with the Do Not Call Registry, regularly monitoring bank and credit card accounts, considering spending limits on accounts, and avoiding purchases from unsolicited callers.

Residents are also advised to be cautious when making donations, never pay money to claim a prize or lottery payout, and resist callers who pressure them to “act now.”

Police also recommend avoiding calls from unrecognized numbers and learning to recognize common phone scams before becoming a victim.
