Sen. Joey Hensley Highlights Agriculture, Conservation and Recycling Legislation

State Sen. Joey Hensley has released another legislative update highlighting measures approved during the 2026 session of the Tennessee General Assembly affecting agriculture, natural resources, recycling, and property insurance.

Among the new laws is legislation designed to strengthen Tennessee’s recycling marketplace by expanding the role of the Office of Cooperative Marketing for Recyclables. The measure creates a public-private advisory council to help connect suppliers with end users, encourage investment, and expand recycling markets without creating new taxes or regulations.

Lawmakers also approved the creation of the Tennessee Agricultural Innovation and Education Initiative, which is intended to strengthen agricultural education through workforce development, career pathways, digital learning resources, and statewide outreach.

Another measure increases insurance coverage limits for certain homeowners and farm owners by raising the maximum coverage for certain property risks from $100,000 to $250,000, providing additional protection for homes, farms, and equipment.

The General Assembly also approved legislation launching a statewide branding initiative to promote Tennessee-raised beef and strengthen market opportunities for the state’s cattle industry.

In addition, lawmakers passed legislation expanding conservation protections for the Buffalo and Duck Rivers. According to Hensley, the law is intended to preserve the scenic, rural, and environmental qualities of the river corridors while discouraging harmful development.

Hensley said the measures are designed to support Tennessee agriculture, strengthen rural communities, encourage economic development, and protect the state’s natural resources.
