Jury Sentences Nathanial Pipkin to Death in Maury County Triple Murder Case

A Maury County jury has sentenced Nathanial Pipkin to death for the 2021 murders of three family members in what prosecutors described as one of the most horrific crimes the community has experienced.

According to 22nd Judicial District Attorney General Brent Cooper, the same jury that found Pipkin guilty deliberated for nearly five hours before returning a death sentence. Cooper said the jury’s foreperson repeated the verdict five times, stating, “The sentence shall be death.”

Cooper said Pipkin instructed his attorneys not to present a case against the death penalty during the sentencing phase.

In a statement following the verdict, Cooper said no outcome could undo the loss suffered by the victims’ families but called the case one that warranted the state’s most severe punishment. He thanked the jurors for their service, Assistant District Attorneys Pam Anderson and Jenni Smith for their work preparing the case, Victim Witness Coordinator Christi Dickey for supporting the victims’ families, and investigators Lt. Roscoe Voss, Keith Wrather, and Matthew McDonald for their work throughout the investigation and trial.

The murders occurred on October 1, 2021, when three members of the same family, including an 11-year-old girl, were killed. Cooper expressed hope that the verdict will allow the victims’ families to begin healing while adding that he hopes the community never experiences another case like it.
