Lawrence County Commissioners Shane Eaton and Wayne Yocom, the two co-sponsors of a resolution calling for a temporary moratorium on data centers, issued statements before and after the County Commission voted to table the resolution.

Three days before the vote, Eaton issued the following statement:

“I am against any data centers in Lawrence County. I am also against property zoning and anything that tells citizens what they can do with their property. I am for being transparent and being responsible with tax payer dollars.”

Following the vote, Yocom issued the following statement:

“I am disappointed the County Commission chose to table my resolution for a temporary moratorium on data centers.

“Over the past several months, I have traveled across my district and listened to the people I represent. The overwhelming majority have made it clear they do not want our farmland handed over to massive developments before county leaders have studied the impact on our land, water, roads, utilities, and rural way of life.

“This was not a ban. It was not codes. It was not zoning. It was just a common-sense pause.

“Tonight, the people’s voice may have been silenced, but it cannot be silenced at the polls next week. I urge everyone to let your voice be heard next Thursday.

“I will continue standing with the farmers, families, and working people of Lawrence County.”
