TDOT Suspends Lane Closures for Independence Day Holiday Travel

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state highways during the Independence Day holiday to help ease travel across the state.

Construction-related lane closures will be halted from noon Thursday, July 2, until 6:00 a.m. Monday, July 6, providing maximum roadway capacity for holiday travelers.

According to AAA, approximately 1.4 million Tennesseans are expected to travel by car during the holiday period.

TDOT Commissioner Will Reid said suspending lane closures will help motorists reach their destinations safely and with fewer delays during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

While construction-related lane closures will be suspended, motorists may still encounter long-term lane closures at some projects. Construction workers may also be present in work zones, and reduced speed limits will remain in effect. Drivers are reminded to slow down, move over for emergency vehicles when possible, and obey all posted speed limits in work zones.

TDOT also encourages travelers to check road conditions before leaving and to avoid distracted driving during the holiday weekend.
