With dangerously hot and humid conditions expected across Middle Tennessee, officials are reminding residents to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illnesses and know how to respond.
Hot weather can overwhelm the body’s natural cooling system, especially during prolonged exposure or strenuous outdoor activity. Dehydration and the loss of fluids and salts through sweating can increase the risk of heat-related illness.
Heat exhaustion symptoms may include dizziness, excessive thirst, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should move to a cooler location, loosen tight clothing, sip cool water, and seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. Warning signs include confusion, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. If someone is showing symptoms of heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cooler area, loosen or remove excess clothing, and cool them with water or ice while waiting for emergency responders.
Officials encourage everyone to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
