Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Lawrence County and Much of Middle Tennessee

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Lawrence County and much of Middle Tennessee west of the Cumberland Plateau.

The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Monday through 8 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters say dangerously hot conditions are expected during the warning period, with heat index values reaching as high as 109 degrees.

The prolonged combination of extreme heat and high humidity is expected to significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

If spending time outdoors, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours, and be alert for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to continue monitoring the latest forecasts and any updated warnings as the dangerous heat persists through Thursday evening.
