Senator Joey Hensley Reflects on Independence Day and Tennessee’s Military Heritage

State Senator Joey Hensley has released an Independence Day message reflecting on the nation’s founding and Tennessee’s long history of military service.

In the statement, Hensley encouraged Tennesseans to remember those who have fought and continue to fight for the freedoms Americans enjoy while celebrating Independence Day with family gatherings, fireworks, and other activities.

Hensley highlighted Tennessee’s military contributions dating back to the American Revolution, including the role of Tennessee volunteers at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He also referenced the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Vietnam, and more recent military conflicts.

The senator noted that Tennessee earned its nickname, “The Volunteer State,” after thousands of Tennesseans volunteered for service during the Mexican-American War, far exceeding the number requested.

Hensley also praised the men and women currently serving in the armed forces and expressed gratitude for their sacrifices.

“On Independence Day we pause to celebrate our freedom and reflect on the sacrifices made for our great country,” Hensley said.
