Authorities Warn Against Golf Carts on Streets

Due to concerns expressed regarding golf carts being driven on public roadways, both the Columbia and Mount Pleasant Police Departments are reminding residents that most such carts are illegal for operation on the roadways.  Golf carts have no Vehicle Identification Number and are designed to travel at speeds of less than 20 miles per hour.  Since they cannot be registered and tagged, they are not made for the roadways.  Some other low speed and medium speed vehicles could be operated legally on roadways.  To be safe, check with your local county clerk’s office before driving these vehicles on the streets.
