Florence/Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency is advising caution on area lakes and waterways as the Tennessee Valley Authority increases water releases following significant rainfall across the region.

According to EMA officials, TVA will be opening spillways and increasing hydroelectric releases over the next 24 to 72 hours to help move excess water through the Tennessee River system.

Officials warn that dangerous currents, swift water conditions, and increased debris, including logs, stumps, and other runoff-related materials, are expected along the Tennessee River.

Boaters are encouraged to wear life jackets, keep a throwable personal flotation device readily available, and inform family members of their planned route and expected return time before heading onto the water.

The advisory remains in effect as TVA works to manage water levels throughout the river system.
