Emergency Agencies Prepare for West Gaines Street Construction Delays

Emergency management and public safety officials are preparing for anticipated traffic disruptions associated with a Tennessee Department of Transportation resurfacing project on State Route 242, also known as West Gaines Street, in Lawrenceburg.

The project is expected to continue for several weeks and includes resurfacing West Gaines Street from Buffalo Road to West Point Road, including the bridges over Crowson Creek and Shoal Creek. According to a public notification distributed Monday, the roadway may be reduced to one lane at times during construction activities this week.

Officials say lane closures, traffic delays, and possible access restrictions within the construction zone could affect emergency response times to areas west of Shoal Creek. To help maintain emergency services, personnel and equipment from several public safety agencies will be strategically positioned at the former Crockett School property.

The Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency has established its Mobile Command Post at the site to support emergency operations and provide a centralized location for emergency personnel. Residents may notice emergency vehicles, equipment, and personnel staged at the location periodically throughout the project.

Lawrence County EMA Director Shelton Barnett said the effort is intended to address potential challenges created by the construction project and help ensure residents continue to receive emergency services without significant delays.

Motorists should expect occasional traffic congestion and delays, particularly in the vicinity of the Shoal Creek bridge. Residents are encouraged to use caution when traveling through the work zone, watch for workers, reduce speeds, allow additional travel time, and seek alternate routes whenever possible.

Lawrence County EMA is coordinating closely with local fire departments, law enforcement agencies, emergency medical services, and TDOT to monitor conditions and adjust response plans as needed.
