The The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has announced the appointment of Steve Shurter as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.
Shurter succeeds retiring CEO Janice Zeitlin, who has led the organization since 2013. During her tenure, The Sanctuary expanded its elephant care programs, conservation partnerships, educational initiatives, and overall organizational impact.
For the past three years, Shurter has served in an operations role with The Elephant Sanctuary, working with staff and board members to strengthen elephant care and advance conservation and education efforts. Prior to joining the organization, he served as Executive Director and CEO of the White Oak Conservation Foundation in Florida.
According to The Elephant Sanctuary, Shurter brings extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, animal science, zoo management, and wildlife conservation. His priorities as CEO will include advancing elephant care and welfare practices, strengthening conservation and education partnerships, and supporting efforts that improve the lives of elephants and protect their habitats.
Located on more than 3,000 acres in Hohenwald, The Elephant Sanctuary is the nation’s largest natural-habitat refuge developed specifically for Asian and African elephants. Founded in 1995, the sanctuary is currently home to 12 elephant residents.
