Senator Hensley Highlights Legislation on Free Speech, Civics, and Education

State Senator Joey Hensley has released another legislative update highlighting several measures approved during the recent Tennessee General Assembly session.

Among the legislation discussed was the Charlie Kirk Act, which Hensley said is designed to strengthen free speech protections at Tennessee public colleges and universities. According to the update, the law prohibits schools from disinviting speakers based on viewpoint and requires institutions to maintain policies protecting free expression and institutional neutrality.

Hensley also highlighted legislation allowing teachers to discuss the historical role of Judeo-Christian values in the founding and development of the United States when relevant to course instruction.

Additional measures included legislation expanding instruction on America’s founding documents and civic principles, clarifying that schools may display historically significant documents such as the Declaration of Independence and Constitution in educational settings, and restoring the Presidential Fitness Test in Tennessee schools.

The update also referenced legislation creating additional workforce pathways for students ages 16 to 19 interested in child care careers through approved work-based learning programs.

Hensley represents Tennessee’s 28th Senatorial District, which includes Giles, Lewis, Marshall, and Maury counties, along with the Williamson County portion of Spring Hill.
