Concerns surrounding potential data center development continue to generate discussion across Middle Tennessee, with several local leaders and political candidates publicly voicing concerns or opposition to projects near farmland and residential areas.
Maury County Mayor Sheila Butt recently said she opposes the development of data centers on farmland and stated she would “never be a part of giving up” farmland for such projects. Butt also said she is looking into the possibility of banning data centers in Maury County.
Maury County Commissioner and mayoral candidate Gabe Howard has also publicly opposed data center development. A campaign social media page for Howard recently shared a graphic featuring a Tennessee farm scene alongside the message, “It’s not worth giving up an inch of this for a data center.”
In Lawrence County, County Commissioner and County Executive candidate Shane Eaton has also publicly opposed data center development. In social media posts, Eaton said he believes potential negative impacts involving farmland, water usage, and community growth outweigh possible economic benefits.
Current Lawrence County Executive David Morgan has also addressed the issue in social media comments responding to residents’ questions. Morgan said he would not support any industry project that would harm Lawrence County’s environment or public health. He also acknowledged concerns involving utility costs, water usage, environmental impacts, and infrastructure demands related to data centers. Morgan also said the situation highlights the need for transparency, public input, and continued discussion as the issue moves forward.
The statements come as residents in several Tennessee communities, including Lawrence County, continue raising concerns about the potential impact of data centers on utilities, water resources, farmland, and surrounding neighborhoods.
