Emergency crews responded Monday evening, May 18, to a train derailment and collision involving a CSX train in the Frankewing community of Giles County.
According to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office and the Giles County Office of Emergency Management, emergency personnel responded to the scene to assess the situation and clear wreckage from the area.
Officials later confirmed hazardous materials were involved in the derailment. Information released to local officials indicated polycarbonate powder had spilled into a nearby creek. Authorities said no hazardous material was airborne.
CSX Transportation, Giles County OEM, TEMA, and other emergency agencies responded to the scene. Officials said containment booms were deployed as crews worked to contain the spill and begin cleanup operations.
In an update released around 9:00 Monday night, the Giles County Office of Emergency Management and CSX Transportation stated there was no threat to public safety and all roadways had reopened.
Cleanup and debris removal operations are expected to continue at the scene. Officials thanked the public for its patience and cooperation during the incident.
