The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance is recognizing Contractor Fraud Awareness Week May 18 through May 22 and encouraging consumers to watch for warning signs involving dishonest contractors.
State officials say most contractors are honest and hardworking, but scammers and fraudulent contractors can create financial problems for unsuspecting homeowners, especially during storm recovery and home renovation projects.
The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors received 858 complaints during 2025 and issued $634,000 in civil penalties connected to 214 complaints.
Officials encourage consumers to verify contractor licenses through Verify.tn.gov, obtain multiple bids, check references, confirm insurance coverage, and always get contracts in writing before work begins.
Consumers are also reminded never to pay cash or pay the full amount upfront before work is completed. Tennessee law prohibits contractors from requiring more than a one-third down payment.
State officials also warn consumers to be cautious of contractors going door-to-door offering deeply discounted repairs and say homeowners should avoid pulling permits themselves for contractor work.
Consumers with concerns about contractors can contact the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors or file complaints through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance website.
