Congressman Andy Ogles and Senator Tommy Tuberville have introduced federal immigration legislation known as the ASSIMILATION Act.
According to the text of the bill, the proposal would make major changes to the nation’s immigration system by revising family-sponsored immigration categories, eliminating the diversity visa lottery program, restructuring employment-based immigration standards, revising asylum and parole policies, and increasing penalties related to visa overstays and unlawful presence.
The legislation would establish what the bill describes as a “national interest standard” for immigration decisions, with a focus on economic self-sufficiency, cultural assimilation, English proficiency, and national security considerations.
Among other provisions, the bill would narrow certain family-based immigration categories, impose additional restrictions and wage requirements on H-1B visa programs, eliminate Optional Practical Training work authorization for foreign students unless specifically authorized by law, and expand public charge and sponsor financial responsibility requirements.
The proposal would also revise asylum procedures, limit parole authority, require employment eligibility verification, and establish additional penalties for visa overstays.
Supporters say the legislation is designed to prioritize immigration policies they believe better serve the economic, cultural, and national security interests of the United States, while critics are expected to argue the measure would dramatically restrict legal immigration pathways.
