Governor Bill Lee has proclaimed May 16 through May 22 as Safe Boating Week in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says the annual observance is designed to promote boating safety awareness ahead of the busy summer boating season and Memorial Day weekend.

TWRA officials are encouraging boaters to wear life jackets, take boating safety courses, check equipment, monitor weather conditions, and avoid operating boats under the influence.

The agency also recommends filing a float plan before heading onto the water and keeping multiple forms of communication available in case of emergency.

According to TWRA, Tennessee has recorded eight boating-related fatalities so far this year, compared to five at the same time in 2025.

Last year, officials reported no boating fatalities during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
