Officials from several different agencies in the area are warning residents about a scam involving the IRS and tax returns. Several people have reported receiving letters by mail that appear to be from the Internal Revenue Service. It claims that they have been unable to direct deposit your tax refund and that you have only 30 days to update your bank account number. The recipient is then instructed to scan a QR code to enter the updated account information. Although the letter may appear legitimate, officials warn that this is a scam and urge those receiving such a letter to report it to your local law enforcement agency.
