The Republican-backed plan divides both Shelby County and Nashville into three separate congressional districts. Republican lawmakers say the map is designed to better reflect Tennessee’s conservative political makeup and strengthen Republican representation in Congress.

The proposal drew strong opposition from Democrats and members of the public during committee hearings and floor debate at the State Capitol.

Media reports say protesters interrupted proceedings during committee meetings, prompting state troopers to clear hearing rooms before debate resumed.

Opponents of the plan argued the new districts weaken representation in Democratic-leaning urban areas, while supporters defended the maps as legally and politically appropriate.

The legislation was approved by both the Tennessee House and Senate before being signed Thursday by Governor Lee.
