Lawrence County Officials Address Property Reappraisal Concerns

The Lawrence County Property Assessor’s Office says assessment change notices for the 2026 countywide reappraisal included a misprint regarding dates for property owners to contact the office.

According to county officials, the notices incorrectly listed April 7 through April 17 as the timeframe to call about property values. Officials say the dates should have listed May instead of April.

The Property Assessor’s Office says it is currently accepting calls and discussing new property values with residents.

Officials also noted that when a countywide reappraisal occurs, the property tax rate is typically lowered to help offset increases in appraised values.

Meanwhile, Lawrence County Executive David Morgan says he understands concerns many residents have regarding rising property values and the possible impact on taxes.

In a social media post, Morgan said Tennessee has experienced significant population growth in recent years, along with higher housing and construction costs tied to inflation.

Morgan also emphasized that the Property Assessor’s Office is required by state law to determine values using standards established by the State of Tennessee and based largely on recent property sales and market conditions.

He added that county officials are required to continue funding essential services such as schools, roads, emergency services, and infrastructure, but said local leaders should continue exploring ways to reduce the burden on taxpayers.
