Tennessee Republican leaders have released a proposed new congressional district map as part of a special legislative session on redistricting.
The proposal was announced Wednesday morning by House Speaker Cameron Sexton and Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson as lawmakers convened at the State Capitol.
Supporters say the plan is intended to reflect the state’s political makeup and modernize the redistricting process. Republican lawmakers say the proposal removes racial data from the mapmaking process and follows recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings related to redistricting.
The special session on redistricting is ongoing, with lawmakers expected to debate the proposal in the coming days.
