Local officials and community members are working to raise funds for a tornado warning siren in the Summertown area.
According to County Commissioner Scott Franks, efforts have been underway for several years to secure grant funding for sirens, but those requests have not yet been approved.
A used siren has already been purchased at a discounted cost, and organizers say approximately $5,000 is needed to cover installation. The siren is expected to be placed near the water towers along Highway 20 to provide coverage for the central part of Summertown, including nearby schools.
Officials say a fundraising campaign has been launched through a nonprofit organization to collect donations, with any additional funds potentially going toward future sirens in other parts of the county.
Organizers say they will provide a full accounting of donations and expenses once the project is complete.
