State officials are promoting Building Safety Month in Tennessee during the month of May.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are joining with the International Code Council to raise awareness about the importance of building codes and safe construction practices.

This year’s theme, “Built to Last,” focuses on how modern building standards and safety professionals help protect homes and communities.

Each week in May will highlight a different aspect of building safety, including home safety, the role of safety professionals, disaster preparedness, and accessibility in construction.

Officials say building codes play a key role in preventing damage from fires and other disasters, while also ensuring structures are safe and resilient.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office conducts thousands of inspections each year across Tennessee to help maintain safety standards.

Officials say Building Safety Month is also an opportunity to recognize the work of codes enforcement professionals who help protect lives and property across the state.
