Governor Bill Lee has declared May as Mental Health Awareness Month in Tennessee.

State officials say the designation is intended to raise awareness about mental health and encourage access to treatment and support services.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance and the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services are reminding residents that many health insurance plans are required to provide mental health coverage comparable to physical health coverage.

Officials say this includes areas such as copays, deductibles, hospital stays, and prescription coverage.

Residents are encouraged to contact their insurance provider to learn more about available mental health and substance abuse treatment options.

Anyone who believes their insurance coverage is not being applied equally can file a complaint with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.

Officials also remind Tennesseans experiencing a mental health emergency to call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
