Bill Requiring English-Only Driver’s License Exam Heads to Governor

The Tennessee General Assembly has passed legislation that would require driver’s license exams to be administered in English.

House Bill 1708, sponsored by State Representative Kip Capley of Summertown, also includes new requirements for vehicle registration applicants to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence.

Under the bill, a one-time exception would allow applicants to take the written driver’s license exam in another language. That license would be valid for three years, after which the applicant must retake the exam in English.

The legislation also strengthens identification requirements for vehicle registration by requiring proof of lawful status in the United States.

Supporters say the measure is aimed at improving roadway safety and accountability.

The bill now heads to Governor Bill Lee’s desk for consideration.
