According to media reports, the City of Florence is considering a water and sewer rate increase to address rising operational costs and aging infrastructure.

City officials say rates have remained largely unchanged for several years, with only a small increase in 2023, despite rising costs for materials, maintenance, and operations. Without adjustments, officials warn the system could face a budget shortfall in the coming years.

Under the proposal, most residential customers could see an increase of about $20 to $30 per month, depending on usage. The plan also includes annual adjustments of 3% to 5% over the next five years.

Officials say the additional revenue would support daily operations, repairs to aging infrastructure, reduction of water loss, and rebuilding emergency reserves. The city also notes current rates are lower than many surrounding communities.

According to media reports, more than 100 miles of pipe in Florence still need replacement, with some infrastructure more than 90 years old. Water loss from leaks is estimated between 20% and 25%, and officials warn the system could face a projected $1.9 million deficit by 2027 if no action is taken.

Florence Mayor Ron Tyler says the goal is to ensure long-term reliability of the city’s water system, not to fund expansion projects.

Officials say more information will be released as the proposal moves forward.
