Sen. Joey Hensley Highlights Legislative Action on Kratom, Vaping, and Public Safety

State Senator Joey Hensley provided an update on several pieces of legislation advancing in the Tennessee General Assembly.

Among the measures, lawmakers passed a bill to ban the sale of kratom in Tennessee. The legislation, known as “Matthew Davenport’s Law,” establishes criminal penalties related to the possession and distribution of the substance. Supporters cite safety concerns and overdose risks as reasons for the ban.

Another bill advancing through committee focuses on youth vaping. The measure would allocate 30% of tax revenue from vapor products toward prevention programs aimed at reducing nicotine use among young people.

Lawmakers also approved legislation targeting celebratory gunfire. The bill makes it a Class A misdemeanor to recklessly discharge a firearm at large public gatherings, with certain exceptions including self-defense and lawful hunting.

In addition, the Senate passed a bill aimed at preventing deed fraud by strengthening requirements for preparing and recording property deeds. The legislation requires additional verification measures before deeds can be officially recorded.

Hensley says the measures are aimed at improving public safety, protecting consumers, and addressing growing concerns across the state.
