The Internal Revenue Service has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in Tennessee affected by Winter Storm Fern, extending several filing and payment deadlines to May 22, 2026.

The relief applies to taxpayers in multiple counties, including Lawrence, Lewis, Maury, Giles, Wayne, Hickman, and others included in the federal disaster declaration.

Officials say taxpayers now have until May 22 to file federal individual and business tax returns and make payments that were originally due between January 22 and May 22.

The extension also applies to quarterly payroll and certain excise tax returns, as well as estimated income tax payments due during that time period. Penalties for certain payroll and excise tax deposits may be waived if payments were made by early February.

The IRS says relief will be applied automatically to those in eligible counties. Taxpayers outside the disaster area who were impacted can call the IRS disaster assistance line at 866-562-5227 to request relief.

Officials say affected taxpayers may also be eligible to claim disaster-related losses on their tax returns and could qualify for additional relief related to retirement accounts or penalty waivers.

Residents can find more information at irs.gov or by contacting the IRS directly.
