First Responders Highlight Air Medical Transports During Busy Week

Lawrence County Fire & Rescue says it was a busy period for local first responders late last week, with multiple calls involving patients suffering life-threatening injuries or medical conditions.

Officials say in several cases, patients received advanced care on scene before being transported by air medical helicopters to trauma centers and specialty hospitals.

Fire crews also emphasized their role in establishing safe landing zones for incoming helicopter EMS units. This includes securing and preparing landing areas, identifying hazards, and maintaining communication with flight crews to ensure safe landings and takeoffs.

Community members expressed appreciation for responders, with one noting three of their grandchildren were airlifted to a Nashville hospital following injuries, and another sharing that their six-year-old son was flown for treatment.

Others praised the skill of helicopter pilots operating in challenging conditions and thanked crews for their efforts during a busy and difficult period.

Officials say the responsibility of managing landing zones is a critical part of their operations as they work alongside EMS and air medical providers.
