Unveiling ceremonies were recently held, revealing a historical marker at the former West Gaines Colored School on West Gaines Street in Lawrenceburg. The school provided an education for local African American children from 1937 until 1965, during a period of segregation. The marker was issued through the Tennessee Historical Commission. The non-profit West Gaines School Community Center board has taken on the long-term project of saving the structure through a restoration and renovation project. It will eventually house a museum and community center. To-date the building has been outfitted with a new roof and some demolition has been completed inside.
