The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club welcomed Greg Lewis of the Tennessee Center for Family Business as the featured speaker at its Friday, April 10, 2026 meeting. Lewis was introduced by Rotary President Elect Tad Keaton.

Lewis presented an informative program on family business transition planning, emphasizing the critical question: Is transition planning a process or an event? He stressed that successful transitions require long-term preparation and intentional communication, not last-minute decisions.  Highlighting the importance of planning, Lewis noted that approximately 85 percent of businesses in the United States are family-owned, yet only about 40 percent successfully transition to the next generation. He explained that transition planning impacts not only families, but also employees, customers, and entire communities.

A key takeaway from the presentation was the importance of communication. Lewis stated, “Silence is not a good option,” illustrating how a lack of planning can create confusion in scenarios such as the sudden loss of a business founder—leaving heirs uncertain about leadership roles, ownership, and daily operations.

Lewis emphasized that effective transition planning typically takes three to five years and involves three major areas:

  • Business Readiness: including systems and operations, leadership development, and financial independence
  • Personal Readiness: preparing individuals for life after the business, identity beyond their role, and financial clarity
  • Family Stakeholder Alignment: fostering clear communication and setting expectations among family members

He encouraged business owners to begin the process early by starting conversations, building the right advisory team, and developing an initial transition plan. Lewis concluded with a strong reminder: “Transition planning is not an event—it’s a process. Your legacy depends on it.”

The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club expressed appreciation to Greg Lewis for his insightful and practical presentation, which provided valuable guidance for business owners and professionals in the community.  The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club meets weekly and is dedicated to service above self, supporting local and international initiatives that strengthen the community and improve lives.
