Lawrence County emergency crews stayed busy Thursday afternoon, responding to an animal rescue, a structure fire, and a vehicle fire.

According to Lawrence County Fire Rescue, units were dispatched to a report of a calf that had fallen into a cave. Crews from LCFR and Lawrenceburg Fire responded and worked alongside community members to safely rescue the animal.

Responders used air monitoring equipment to ensure conditions inside the cave were safe before building a rope system to lower rescuers down to assess the calf and prepare it for removal. At the same time, those on the surface constructed a haul system to lift the animal out. Officials say the calf was successfully rescued without incident.

Stations responding to the rescue included the LCFR Day Crew, as well as the Ethridge and West Point stations.

While crews were working the rescue, additional LCFR personnel responded to a mutual aid request for a structure fire in Giles County. Members of the Crossroads and New Prospect stations assisted with tanker support and manpower.

On the return trip from that call, Crossroads Tanker 20 encountered a vehicle fire along Highway 64 in Giles County and stopped to assist with extinguishing the blaze.

In an update Friday morning, officials said the calf is in good condition and appears unaffected by the incident after checking with the farmer.

Officials again praised the teamwork between responders and community members, noting the successful outcome of the rescue and response efforts.
