Florence City Schools officials say the board voted 5-0 during a special called meeting Wednesday to hire Bill W. Hopkins Jr. as the new superintendent.
Hopkins had been serving as interim superintendent since January following the retirement of Dr. Jimmy Shaw at the end of the first semester. He previously served as superintendent of Fayetteville City Schools in Tennessee and Morgan County Schools.
Hopkins said he did not initially plan to apply for the position but developed a strong connection to the district over time.
He brings decades of experience in education, including 30 years in Morgan County Schools, where he held multiple roles before becoming superintendent.
Hopkins said he plans to build on the academic success established under his predecessor while maintaining a strong focus on students and community engagement.
He described himself as a leader who values visibility and transparency and said he enjoys connecting with the community through local events and meetings.
Hopkins also emphasized the importance of high expectations, noting he has been impressed with the standards set by faculty, staff, and the community.
Looking ahead, he said improving infrastructure will be a priority, while also increasing student involvement in decision-making. Plans include creating student advisory groups and exploring the addition of a non-voting student representative on the school board.
Hopkins currently lives in Madison and said he and his wife are now looking for a home in Florence.
He expressed optimism about the district’s future, highlighting the importance of collaboration among educators, students, and the community.
