The University of North Alabama has selected Dr. Joseph Gray as its next Director of Bands following a nationwide search.
According to the university, Dr. Gray will lead the Marching Pride and serve as an Associate Professor of Music.
University officials say Gray brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as Associate Director of Bands at UNA from 2019 to 2025.
Dr. Brien Smith, Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, said Gray brings a wealth of knowledge about music as well as the Marching Pride. Smith added that Gray is familiar with UNA, the program, and the students, and has a long history of professional and teaching experience that make him the right fit.
Dr. Gray, a trumpet specialist, holds degrees from California State University, Long Beach; the University of New Mexico; and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He will leave his current position at Mississippi State University to return to UNA.
Gray said he is honored to return to the University of North Alabama as Director of Bands and is excited to build on the legacy of the band program. He added that his previous time at UNA was the most transformational period of his professional career and that returning to Florence was an easy decision for his family.
As Director of Bands, he will oversee the Marching Pride along with UNA’s concert and jazz bands within the university’s Department of Music.
Dr. Ryan Zayac, Dean of the College, said Gray’s familiarity with UNA, its band and music programs, and local high schools will allow him to transition smoothly into the role and continue advancing student success.
Dr. Gray is expected to begin his new role on May 1.
