Two Tuscumbia police officers fired their weapons during a confrontation with a vehicle late Friday night, according to media sources.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says the incident began around 11 p.m. when Colbert County deputies spotted a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a convenience store along U.S. Highway 43.
Authorities say Tuscumbia Police responded, and as deputies approached the vehicle — identified as a 2015 Hyundai Genesis — the driver suddenly put the car in reverse and struck a patrol vehicle.
According to ALEA, two officers then fired their weapons, and the driver fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit.
Investigators say the vehicle later left the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned at the intersection of Cedar Lane and Old Covered Bridge Road in Colbert County.
Both the driver and a passenger were injured in the crash and transported to Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield for treatment. No officers were reported injured.
The ALEA State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Colbert County District Attorney’s Office.
