The Giles County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving fake calls about electronic ankle monitors.
Officials say they have received multiple reports from citizens who were contacted by individuals claiming to be “Lt. Morrison” or “Lt. Johns” with the sheriff’s office. Callers are telling family members of incarcerated or recently released individuals that they must send money—ranging from $500 to more than $1,200—for an ankle monitor placement fee.
The sheriff’s office says those claims are false. They do not have anyone by those names working there, and no legitimate monitoring company will contact family members demanding payment.
Authorities also say if an ankle monitor is required, it is installed before an individual is released, and legitimate payments are not requested through methods like cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, or gift cards.
Residents who receive a call like this are urged to hang up and contact the sheriff’s office directly if they have concerns.
Officials encourage the public to remain alert and report any suspected scams.
