The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club welcomed Doug Smith, Manager of the Lawrenceburg-Lawrence County Airport, as the guest speaker during its regular meeting on Friday, March 27, 2026. The program was introduced by Rotarian Maria Santini.
Smith highlighted the airport’s recent recognition as Tennessee’s 2025 Airport of the Year, selected from 78 airports across the state. He outlined significant long term improvements that contributed to this honor, including upgrades to hangar and terminal facilities, a rebuilt ramp, and the addition of after-hours fueling capabilities.
He also discussed the airport’s progress in overcoming past operational challenges, noting that it had been operating under a conditional license until 2023. Through the acquisition of surrounding properties and clearing of both north and south approaches, the airport has enhanced safety and operational efficiency. Additional improvements include new hangars, refurbished ramp space, expanded fueling facilities, and the addition of hangar space. Smith emphasized the airport’s vital role as the “front door” for many business prospects visiting the community, noting that first impressions at the airport often set the tone for economic development opportunities.
Smith shared plans for upcoming events, including the annual fall fly-in, and introduced Jill Gowen, Chair of the Airport Board. Looking ahead, he discussed the airport’s future goals, balancing growth with maintaining its small-community appeal. He noted expectations for increased corporate aviation activity and a long-term goal to extend the current 5,000-foot runway to 6,000 feet. Additional enhancements include the installation of LED runway lighting.
Smith concluded by reinforcing the message that “Tennessee Airports Mean Business,” highlighting the important role local airports play in supporting economic growth and community development.
The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club is dedicated to community service and welcomes individuals interested in making a difference locally and around the world.
