Tennessee lawmakers are considering legislation that would lower the minimum age for school bus drivers from 25 to 23 in an effort to address ongoing driver shortages.
According to media sources, House Bill 1790 and Senate Bill 2121 would allow younger drivers to obtain a commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement while maintaining current training and safety requirements.
Current law allows 23-year-olds to drive a school bus only under certain conditions, such as being a veteran, member of the National Guard or reserve, or a licensed teacher. The proposed bill would expand eligibility while still allowing local school districts to set stricter requirements if they choose.
Supporters say the change would help ease staffing shortages and improve reliability of student transportation while maintaining safety standards.
The legislation would take effect July 1 if approved.
