On Sunday, March 1, Lawrence County Fire & Rescue (LCFR) units responded to multiple calls for service, including two structure fires and a grass/brush fire.
The first structure fire was reported shortly after 5:00 PM in the Iron City Fire District. First responding units arrived to find a 1–1.5 acre field and a large barn on fire. Units from Iron City and Westpoint assisted in extinguishing the fire. The fire is believed to have been caused by an unattended garbage burn pile.
Just before 7:00 PM, LCFR units were dispatched to a second structure fire in the Crossroads Fire District. Dispatch indicated that one occupant was attempting to exit the home. First arriving units found an approximately 4,000-square-foot home with smoke visible from the exterior. The occupant had safely exited through a window. LCFR units contained and extinguished the fire using an interior attack, while additional personnel assisted with removing family pets from inside the home. The cause of this fire has not yet been released. Responding stations included Crossroads, Center Point, Leoma, and New Prospect.
