A controlled burn, for which the property owner had obtained a burn permit in accordance with local and state laws, was caught by gust winds Friday, causing it to spread and consume several acres of field and woods. Lawrence County Fire fighters were dispatched to the brush fire just before noon. Terrain made extinguishing the fire challenging. They were able to cut fire lines around the wooded area to slow progress until the field could be extinguished. Two disabled vehicles were also consumed by the blaze. Officials note that the resident did everything properly, but that conditions caused the fire to spread despite best efforts.
