Firefighters in Lawrence County were kept busy Friday extinguishing brush fires spread by gusty conditions. Around 1:30 they extinguished a structure fire in the West Point fire district that had spread to a detached garage and mobile home, encompassing 2 to 3 acres. While still at the scene, units were dispatched to a brush fire in the Leoma fire district where the fire spread into a wooded area, covering around 2 acres. Due to the steep terrain, firefighters had to utilize different means to contain the fire, such as fire rakes, backpack blowers and portable water extinguishers.
